Tail-Wagging Trails: Exploring Victoria Park and the Cobequid Trail

If you’ve spent five minutes chatting with me, you know two things: I live and breathe Truro real estate, and I am completely obsessed with the team’s dogs: Maci, Arlo, Sasha, Oakley, and Violet. Amy Crowell and her pups, Oakley and Violet, have officially joined our unofficial trail-testing department, which means this guide now has even more wagging-tail approval behind it. Violet lives for affection and could happily spend an evening watching TV, especially if there’s bird stalking or animal watching involved. Oakley, meanwhile, is all about sunbathing and proudly hauling around his favourite blankie like it’s essential gear. Being a dog owner in Colchester County isn't just a hobby; it’s a lifestyle. One of the questions I get most often from folks looking at truro homes for sale is, “Where can I actually walk my dog without just circling the block?”

Well, grab the leash and a handful of treats, because we are spoiled for choice here. We recently put together a comprehensive Dog Guide for our clients, and today I want to dive deep into my absolute favorite on-leash parks and trails. Better yet, these local spots have been personally vetted by the team’s dogs: Maci, Arlo, Sasha, Oakley, and Violet. It’s a tough job, but somebody has to do the sniff-testing. Whether you’re a local looking for a new weekend routine or you’re planning a move to the area, these spots are the "best in show."

The Crown Jewel: Victoria Park

If Truro had a heart, it would be Victoria Park. Spanning over 3,000 acres in the center of town, it is quite literally a playground for both humans and canines. When people ask me why they should consider downtown Truro for their next home, this park is usually my first talking point.

For us dog owners, Victoria Park offers a massive network of trails. You can stick to the lower, flatter paths if you’re just looking for a casual stroll, or head up into the reservoir area for a bit of a hike. The scenery is spectacular, think old-growth hemlocks, steep-sided gorges, and hidden waterfalls.

A quick reminder for the park: it is strictly an on-leash area. Because it’s so popular with families, runners, and other pups, keeping Maci and the gang on their leashes keeps everyone happy. Plus, with the steep cliffs near the waterfalls, it’s just safer for our curious four-legged friends.

The Cobequid Trail: 18km of Pure Adventure

If your pup has a bit more energy to burn, the Cobequid Trail is where you want to be. This is an 18-km trail network with official access points and trailheads through Truro and out toward Old Barns.

Most of the trail follows a former rail line, which means it’s relatively flat and covered in hard-packed gravel, perfect for paws of all sizes. What I love most about the Cobequid Trail is the variety. You can walk through Acadian dykelands, past working farmlands, and along the Salmon River. If you time it right, you and your dog can even watch the tidal bore roll in. It also gets bonus points from Violet, who would absolutely treat the birds and wildlife like premium live television.

A Note on Safety (The "Coyote Talk"):
I have to put on my "protective dog mom" hat for a second. When you’re out on the Cobequid Trail, particularly in the Old Barns section, please be mindful. Coyotes are known to frequent the area. It’s another great reason to keep that leash firmly in hand. We want our walks to be memorable for the views, not the wildlife encounters!

Peace and Quiet: Kiwanis Pond & MacElmons Pond

Sometimes you don’t want a 10km trek; you just want a peaceful loop where your dog can sniff every single blade of grass in peace.

Kiwanis Pond is a local favorite located right in Truro. It’s a gentle, easy walk near the water and a nice option when you want something simple and relaxing. It’s perfect for senior dogs who still want to get out and about but can't handle the hills of Victoria Park. It's also a great spot for bird watching, which makes it a top-tier outing for Violet, who takes animal watching very seriously, though Arlo usually prefers watching the squirrels.

A bit further out, near the Debert area, is MacElmons Pond Provincial Park. This spot is a bit of a hidden gem. It features a lovely wooded trail and plenty of spots for a picnic. If your dog’s idea of a successful outing includes finding a warm sunny patch to flop in for a while, Oakley would very much like to recommend it. If you are looking at homes for sale in Onslow or Debert, this will likely become your go-to weekend spot.

Exploring Further: Stewiacke River Park

If you’re okay with a short drive, Stewiacke River Park is absolutely worth the trip. It’s managed by the Municipality of Colchester and offers some of the most beautiful river views in the county.

The trails here wind through the forest and along the riverbanks. There are plenty of open spaces and picnic shelters, making it a fantastic destination for a family day out (furry members included). The terrain is varied but manageable, and the sense of peace you get out there is unmatched. It’s also the kind of place where Oakley could settle into a sunny resting spot like he personally booked it in advance, blankie optional but encouraged. It’s one of the reasons the Hilden and Stewiacke areas are becoming so popular for buyers who want a bit more space and nature.

Mi’kmawey Debert Interpretive Trail

For a walk that offers a bit of history along with the exercise, check out the Mi’kmawey Debert Interpretive Trail. It’s a 4.4km loop that is as educational as it is beautiful. The trail takes you through diverse forest types and includes interpretive panels that share the history of the Mi’kmaw people who have lived in this area for thousands of years.

It’s a quiet, respectful place to walk. The trail is well-marked and offers a slightly different vibe than the more "urban" parks in central Truro. Around our team, it gets high marks from Maci, Arlo, Sasha, Oakley, and Violet, who have collectively declared the deep-woods sniff situation excellent. And if your dog is more of a cuddle bug than a chaos goblin, Violet would likely approve of the calmer pace too.

2. The "Short Leash" Rule: When passing other walkers or cyclists, keep your pup on a short leash. Not everyone is a "dog person" (crazy, I know!), and some dogs can get overwhelmed by bikes zooming past.
3. Carry Water: Some of these trails, especially the Cobequid, can be quite exposed to the sun. Make sure you have a collapsible bowl for your pup.
4. Check for Ticks: Like most of Nova Scotia, our beautiful tall grasses can hide ticks. Always do a quick "once-over" when you get back to the car.
